Drought-Tolerant Plants
Plan a drought-tolerant garden
If you're in an area that is dry and has water restrictions, or when you live in an area that has ample natural rainfall the garden must have plants that will not die when it gets warm and humid. If you select plants that can take dry and hot weather with a smile and design your garden with less water use to be in your mind, then you'll have less time pulling a hose through the garden, instead of enjoying a relaxing time on the patio. Do not stop watering your plants simply because they endure a bit of drought. You can rest assured that when temperatures rise your water bill won't need to go up, either!
Plants that are drought-tolerant have traits
The majority of these plants sport beautiful flowers, and some have gorgeous foliage, however, all of them have characteristics that permit them to endure and even flourish during dry conditions. They may have extremely deep roots that allow them to access the water, or they may have fleshy roots which hold water. They may also have leaves that reflect light or hold moisture. These features help the plant keep as much water as feasible in times of drought If you notice these, it is usually a sign that the plant is drought-resistant.

More information on the importance of watering
The fact that you can cut back on watering does not mean you cannot have a garden that is full of blooming flowers and lush foliage! It is important that you give these annuals as well as perennials regular watering until they're established and they'll blossom right through dry, hot conditions without difficulty. A moisture-retention cover of natural mulch, such as pine straw is also a great option for these plants. Once established, these plants are easy to cultivate and enjoy, even when rain isn't easy to find. Click here to find out more about each one.
